The first is the work by N. G. Majumdar on the early medieval Bengal society. The second is the work of Kumar Ramakrishna on the brahmanical literature of early medieval Bengal.75 Since this was also the period of the emergence of the brahmanical puras, he tried to correlate the two. He showed the brahmanical movements from the confessional aspect and their interaction with regional culture, the Jain and Buddhist traditions. As a result of the excavations at the sites of Attanagar and Duttasthali, he also discovered the work of the brahmanical poets of ancient Bengal, which he edited and published.76

Much of the surviving early medieval material has been discussed in the context of Buddhist art.75 Most of the extant Buddhist material is in stone sculptures, medallions and wall paintings, while a few examples are in manuscript.76 As the most abundant form of Buddhist art in Bengal, this material has been the subject of several scholarly studies.77 The study of Buddhist art has its roots in the work of Jamapa Ramayya, a dedicated Buddhist art scholar.78 Charan Chattopadhyaya has used those studies to study the evolution and spread of the Buddha image in Bengal.79
