In addressing the first question, this article will evaluate the way in which two units of analysis (individual idioms and individual raters) will be used in this study. Then, the study will examine the way in which the informants' social background may influence the ratings that they provide for individual idioms. The two units of analysis are considered as individual idioms and individual raters. The informants' social background is defined by their occupation and education, and these are considered as fixed factors.
Advocates of the current study's methodology argue that the approach used in this study to understanding semantic transparency intuitions of idioms is both conceptually novel and conceptually rooted. The methodology that is adopted in this study is conceptually rooted in the way in which non-linguists conceptualize and understand the semantics of idioms. In line with cognitive linguistics and generative semantics, non-linguists are thought to conceptualize and interpret the semantics of idioms by referring to their metaphors and to their encyclopedic world knowledge (Gibbs 1992; Gibbs et al., 1997). This view is also supported by work on metaphor and metonym in cognitive linguistics and generative semantics (Lakoff, 1993; Lakoff, Johnson, 1980). Correspondingly, this view has also been adopted for understanding idioms (Gibbs, 1992; Gibbs et al. 1997). Also in line with this view, this article argues that pragmatic inferencing is essential in understanding how native speakers of English perceive the semantic transparency of idioms.
To address the first question, this article will examine the role that pragmatic inferencing and encyclopedic world knowledge play in understanding the semantic transparency of idioms. To address the second question, the article will look at the way in which pragmatic inferencing via encyclopedic knowledge plays a role in understanding the semantic transparency of idioms. For both questions, both quantitative and qualitative data will be examined.
