Kottayam Chellappan, Kamaladevi and the hero were the only characters, who are in the original poetic work, have not been retained. The characters, which were created by the script writer for the screen version are, Ramanan (played by Kamal), Vallon (Karthi) and his father, (played by Manavalan Joseph). Though Karthi is the son of Vallon, in this version a woman (Kamaladevi) marries Vallon and gives birth to a son, who takes the name as Vallon. This Vallon (Karthi) is the son of a woman who has a liaison with a Chandran (played by Dileep). Both Chandran and Vallon's mother dies, leaving her son orphaned. With the help of the temple priest, Adoor and Vallon's amiable father, Vallon is adopted by a Vallon, who is a friend of the Chandran. Vallon grows up to be a rich man, married to a Kamal (Kottayam Chellappan), who is now very old. The one who plays the role of the Chandran in the screen version is Sunder Babu, who is a folk hero, a well known, stage actor in the Nilgiri hills. The story and characters in the screen version are so exaggerated that the original story has been lost. The screen version of the story is so poor that all the good performances, specially by Karthi and Kamaladevi, are wasted. Though there is no significance deviation in the storyline of the original story, the script and the dialogues failed to pass on to the audiences the emotions contained in the original work.
The visuals and photography were by V. M. Vinayakan and they were excellent. The only drawback was that the film was shot in Malayalam language though the scenes were supposed to have been shot in Tamil language. The cinematography was clean and the background music was by K. V. Mahadevan. K. Raghavan's music was excellent and the songs were beautiful. The film was released on July 3, 1984.
The advance bookings for the movie were packed to the fullest. The movie created such an impact that it was widely shown in many parts of the country. Even today the original Malayalam novel and the movie is screened even today at the cultural fests held in many parts of Kerala. The film was also telecast on Doordarshan.
But on the whole the movie was an excellent and a good effort at the direction of D. M. Pottekkat and the script writing of D. M. Pottekkat, Kottayam Chellappan and so on. The acting was good and good use was made of the rural life style of Karnataka. The story was based on true events. The working of the film was excellent.
