In this study, we propose a general model, which unifies these mechanisms and allows for the prediction of the melting behavior of extruded polymer systems, which is not the case for filament-based AM. The EAM conditions are monitored by a set of equations that include the melt shear rate and the shear-induced melting temperature, allowing us to predict the transition from the shear-induced to the viscoelastic extrusion. Note that the extruded material is thus described by three independent, but interacting, mechanisms, i.e., the melting, the viscoelastic extrusion, and the solidification. The model is then applied to the extrusion of EBM filaments in which the melting and viscoelastic extrusion mechanisms have been validated experimentally and theoretically for each thermoplastic [20].
