In the course of the game, Nicky begins to exhibit bizarre and highly disturbing behaviors, and his worsening mental state is hinted at during several scenes involving flashbacks or memories. Examples include him bleeding his designer dress in public, missing work for weeks seemingly without explanation, and his reasoning for moving into the house. He has visions of a seductive serial killer named "Murdering Teddy." On several occasions, he exhibits signs of paranoia, as in an argument with Ryan where he states that he knows that Ryan wants to kill him.
The events of the game begin during Nicky's first-ever meeting with a childhood friend, Fiona, whom he calls "Fee" throughout the game. Fiona is a singer and songwriter, who coincidentally was also bullied for being overweight during her school days. Fee attends a birthday party where she witnesses Mr. Peterson kill Fiona's mother, Gillian, who was the headmistress of a private school that they both attended. Welkin later retrieves the body of Fiona's mother from the school's cafeteria where she had been the lunch buffet before finding her in the school's main entrance. While Nicky witnesses Fiona's murder, his own death is blocked from his mind due to a "paralysis of the soul." Also, one of Fiona's mother's friends, Jenny, helps take her mother's body to the school, but when she hears a noise outside, she hides in the schoolyard. Although Nicky has amnesia, he has the perfect memory of Fiona's murder; he can only hear the sound of her singing right before she was killed, as he refuses to allow Fee to record the song she sang for him; it is the song "Everything," and it is only the aide of a Sony recording unit when Nicky explains to her "No one will ever hear it without me.... The memory is all I have to keep me sane." d2c66b5586
