Rafi's critical stature of all time can be measured by the fact that within a few decades of his death, such diverse musicians as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Shankar Mahadevan, Diljit Dosanjh, T. M. Krishna, Sriram Ravikiran, and Lata Mangeshkar emerged. Rafi's singing style made him a legend of the Hindi film industry, and his influence is felt in film scores and Hindi film music to this day.

Outside India, he is well known in Pakistan and Iran. However, not so in Europe, where he faced a struggle to break into the market. Music historian Angharad Nocera added, "In the U.S., his singing almost became a forgotten art."

Rafi's death came a few weeks after the death of lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri, 23 June 1980.[48] Like Rafi, Majrooh too was 52. The journalists Roshan 'Satyajit' Pratap and Joginder Tuteja say that they felt saddened to arise in the morning to find Rafi was no more and they, like millions, felt this as a personal loss. Rafi's death, at an age no younger than many of his fans, suddenly changed the tone of Hindustani music and gave credence to the allegation that singing had become outdated. Naunihal Sayed, who was working as an assistant on Aas Paas, says he was shocked when Rafi died, since he became friends with him in Bombay during the mid-1950s. He says Rafi was kind, respectful and generous. He said Rafi sought his advice once about his career, and Rafi told him he wanted to learn composing. When Sayed told Rafi that he himself was not a good musician, Rafi retorted, "You don't know music." Sayed says, "The death of this voice brought change. Today there are many fantastic musicians, but even when their voices get reduced, they still sing till the last breath. But my generation's voice is no longer there.
