Finding ways of working sustainably that allow time for and are enjoyable for the researcher may be alien to some academics. Although this journal supports work-life balance, all our academics and researchers also work hard and for long hours, often conducting their research or teaching. This requires robust self-care and an attention to context-sensitive physical health. This also means that some carers, parents and partners provide the time, energy, skill and support to make it possible to achieve the goals set.
Our ability to support free expression: We do not take down content as a matter of course. When a request is received from a government to remove content, we meet with the lawyer or other qualified professional who requires the content to establish whether it contravenes the law or our terms of service. We will try to help comply, but where this is very difficult we must consider the impact on our users. If the content is funded by a corporate or private donor, and we are asked to remove it, we have three criteria to consider: has the source given the materials to us in a transparent manner; is the law clearly interpreted to remove the content; and can we provide an alternative source to which the source could point. We seek advice on this issue from a professional lawyer before we take down content.
Our approach to privately shared or user-generated content: We are not in a position to undertake blanket removal of content. Our Terms of Service include a blanket copyright licence that permits us to remove content that is reported to us by users of the site. If a user does not grant a licence for us to use the material, we have a choice between: adopting or adapting the work; not using or adapting it; or working only to understand the context and what is at risk for the user, and respect the user’s decision. We choose the first of these three options unless the content is clearly illegal or illegal under our terms of service. Where we use material without requesting a licence, that will generally be used within the law, or close to this limit. We would certainly not knowingly use content that is illegal or illegal under our terms of service. To minimise the risk of our users’ rights being undermined, we will only take down content when we are unable to comply with a law. d2c66b5586
