Wether

Weather refers to climate conditions and whether comes before a choice. As for wether, be careful. If you say "We're having great wether tonight," it might sound like you're serving castrated goat for dinner.

wether

A wether is a ram or billy goat that was castrated at a young age. Wethers can be housed with the female sheep or goats, but intact bucks and rams usually are kept separately. Continue reading...

also bell-wether, "lead sheep (on whose neck a bell was hung) of a domesticated flock," mid-14c. (late 13c. in Anglo-Latin; late 12c. as a surname), from bell (n.) + wether. The figurative sense of "chief, leader" is attested from mid-14c.

late 14c., "calf meat as food," from Anglo-French vel, Old French veel "a calf" (12c., Modern French veau), earlier vedel, from Latin vitellus "a little calf," diminutive of vitulus "calf," perhaps originally "yearling," if related, as some think, to Sanskrit vatsah "calf," literally "yearling;" Gothic wiþrus, Old English weðer (see wether; also see veteran).

c. 1500, "old experienced soldier," from French vétéran, from Latin veteranus "old, aged, that has been long in use," especially of soldiers; as a plural noun, "old soldiers," from vetus (genitive veteris) "old, aged, advanced in years; of a former time," as a plural noun, vetores, "men of old, forefathers," from PIE *wet-es-, from root *wet- (2) "year" (source also of Sanskrit vatsa- "year," Greek etos "year," Hittite witish "year," Old Church Slavonic vetuchu "old," Old Lithuanian vetušas "old, aged;" and compare wether). Latin vetus also is the ultimate source of Italian vecchio, French vieux, Spanish viejo. General sense of "one who has seen long service in any office or position" is attested from 1590s. The adjective first recorded 1610s.

A good way to remember the difference between wether, whether, and weather is to think that a castrated goat is missing something, so wether is missing an H or an A.

Now you know the difference between wether, whether, and weather. What other words do you tend to get confused with one another? Let us know in the comments.

Are you confused by the difference between these two classes? The Minnesota State Fair has put together an information sheet to better understand the difference between the wether dam and a commercial ewe class to exhibit at the Minnesota 4-H State Fair Sheep Show.

Sheep terminology Sheep and lambs Sheep are over one year of age. They have usually produced offspring. Lambs are less than one year of age. They have usually not produced offspring. Lamb and mutton Lamb is also the term for the flesh of a young domestic sheep eaten as food. The meat from a sheep that is older than 12 months is called mutton. Yearling mutton is the meat from a sheep between 1 and 2 years of age. Mutton has a much stronger flavor than lamb. Wool The fiber that most sheep grow is called wool. The wool from one sheep is called a fleece. Many fleeces from the same farm, wool pool, region, or state are called a clip. Shearing is when the wool is cut off (or shaved) from the sheep. Ewes A female sheep is called a ewe. Yoe is a slang term for ewe. A young female is called a ewe lamb. The process of giving birth to lambs is called lambing. Another word for birthing is parturition. Another word for pregnancy is gestation. Rams A male sheep is called a ram. Buck is the slang term for ram. A young male is called a ram lamb. In parts of the United Kingdom, a ram is called a tup and the mating season is called tupping. Wethers A castrated male sheep is called a wether. Wethers are less aggressive than rams. Yearling A yearling is an animal between 1 and 2 years of age that may or may not have produced offspring. In other countries, a yearling ewe is called a hogget, shearling, gimmer, theave, or teg. Flock A group of sheep is called a flock. Larger groups of sheep are called bands or mobs. Shepherd A shepherd is a person who cares for sheep. Sheepherder A sheepherder is a herder of sheep (on open range). It is someone who keeps the sheep together in a flock. In the U.S., the sheepherder is not usually the owner of the sheep. Farm (n) A farm is an area of land, including various structures, devoted primarily to the practice of producing and managing food. It usually includes cultivated land for producing crops Ranch A ranch is a farm consisting of a large tract of land along with facilities needed to raise livestock. Abattoir An abattoir is a building where animals are slaughtered and processed into meat products. It comes from the French word, abattre, "to strike down."

The wether is stronger than other sheep. The wether gets its Latin name vervex from the worms (vermis) in its head, says Isidore of Seville. When wethers are excited by an itch they strike one another with great force.

If you have your own farm, adding wethers to your herd can be quite beneficial. (1) If you do community outreach, a wether is perfect for the job so you do not have to worry about putting stress on a milking doe by taking her off the farm. We have a wether here at Edgwick Farm (Eli!) that we have used for farmers market visits, programs at the library (did you know Eli has his own library card?) and he was even in the local parade. (2) Although wethers cannot breed does, they can still tell when a doe is in heat. Having a wether during breeding season is quite beneficial. After the bucks have bred the herd, Eli will let us know if a breeding was unsuccessful and the doe needs to be reintroduced to a buck. (3) You can train your wether to be the herd leader, leading the does out to pasture and back in at the end of the day. We have also found that Eli is the peace keeper of the herd, always trying to separate fights between does.

We will have lots of baby boys born here on the farm this season. Feel free to email us with any questions or if you would like to add some boys to your family or herd. We have heard so many loving success stories from families who chose to add wethers from our farm to their lives!

Alternately, a tool called a Burdizzo Emasculator (pictured below) can turn a ram lamb into a wether via castration. This tool crushes the spermatic cord. This destroys the blood supply to the testicles which causes them to shrivel up and die.

Generally castration with an Elastrator or Emasculator will cause short-lived pain and these are the methods we recommend if you are going to castrate ram lambs. No matter which way you choose to castrate your rams to make them wether sheep, do so before the lambs are 6 weeks of age.

But as high as I am on my winner there are pieces in the 4 ewe that would be fun to breed around. The ewe that is the best in her hamp feature brings the added shape and athletic body type that wether buyers demand. Yet, upfront the ewe thats off in her neck attachment cant match the balance of my winner.

DeSchepper, a member of the ROWVA FFA chapter and Cloverleaf 4H Club, also showed the grand champion wether in 2009 and 2006. Her lamb fetched $7,500 in last year's Sale of Champions. She is saving her winnings for college.

At the 1905 show, sheep of each breed, and also cross-breds, competed as (1) wether lambs under twelve months old, and (2) wether sheep above twelve and under twenty-four months old.

In the sheep section of the Smithfield show the classes for ewes were finally abolished in 1898, and the classes restricted to wethers and wether lambs, whose function is exclusively the production of meat.

In 1907, the championship went to a Cheviot wether, but in the two pure, short-woolled classes all the ten awards were secured by Suffolks, and in the two cross-bred wether classes nine of the ten awards went to a Suffolk cross. 041b061a72
